Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences…aka DAAS

I was especially taken with a bunch of kids from Detroit this week.

Detroit, Michigan, the murder capital of the world. Not much good news coming out of there, right? Wrong.

A young group of students from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences are going to change your mind and your heart, to boot.

Their enthusiasm for their City is contagious and even more important, full of hope.

Jenna Bush Hager, correspondent for NBC News and the “Today Show” interviewed the students and their innovative teacher, Ms. Angela Kee.

Ms. Kee gave her students the assignment to re-write Empire State of Mind, to reflect a celebration of Detroit, thus, creating “Detroit State of Mind”, as well as a phenomenon that has put the spirits of these children and those who live in Detroit, into orbit. It was exactly what the City needed, a boost, to give a well needed sense of pride instead of dread. The results have been amazing and almost 60k hits later on You Tube, these children are enjoying a well deserved place in the spotlight.

You can see their video here.

Another short interview with the kids here.

I am so happy for these kids and can’t wait to see what their futures bring.

Loudly yours,

Alicia

I liked the article about the children, but calling Detroit “murder capital of the world”? I thought that was a bit harsh. Granted, it was the murder capital of the US in 2009 (and it tried to cover it up by fudging the numbers), but this year another city has that dubious distinction.
I’m a Michigander and I know the good and bad about Detroit. It’s kind of like having a sibling that’s a screw-up. It’s ok for family to complain, but they get offended when somebody else does. 😉

Thank you so much for responding Diane! “Murder capitol” is only a name I heard from the interview, not my personal opinion. My Son’s girlfriend lives in Michigan, sodo not want to offendanyone from Michigan!! Thanks again!

        Dawne,
My apologies for misspelling your name! I was trying to respond while on the treadmill…clearly not the way to go! Thanks again for your comment.

Thanks, Alicia. I admire you for being able to respond while you were on the treadmill. Headphones and music are about all I can handle on one of those.
